Overview
Wrapbook automates many labor-related calculations for your production — but some decisions require your input, and some questions are outside the scope of what Wrapbook can answer. This article explains the boundary clearly so you know where to look for help.
What Wrapbook calculates and enforces automatically
Once your project is configured, Wrapbook handles the following without manual intervention:
Meal penalties — based on the meal break setting selected for your project (California Meal Settings, Deductible Meals, or Paid Meals). See Understanding meal break settings in Wrapbookfor details.
Overtime — based on what's assigned to each project worker. Wrapbook applies daily and/or weekly thresholds for the chosen time calculation and adds OT pay to worker timecards automatically. See How Wrapbook for details.
Union provisions — based on the union agreement assigned to your project. Wrapbook applies union-specific rules (such as meal penalties, rest periods, and premium pay) for workers covered under that agreement.
What requires setup
Wrapbook's automatic calculations depend on your project being correctly configured. Be sure to share the following project details with your Wrapbook Customer Success Manager.
What’s set up | Why it matters |
|---|---|
Project work location | Determines which overtime rules are available to assign to project workers |
Meal break setting selection | Determines how meal breaks are tracked and whether penalties are triggered (California / Deductible / Paid) |
Union agreement assignment | Determines which union rules apply to covered workers |
If any of these are not configured correctly, Wrapbook's automatic calculations may not reflect your production's actual obligations. Contact your Wrapbook Customer Success Manager or the Wrapbook Support Team if you need help with project setup.
What is outside Wrapbook's scope
Some questions require professional legal or compliance expertise that Wrapbook is not in a position to provide. These include:
Legal advice on labor law compliance — whether a specific production practice is lawful in a given state
Interpretation of union contracts or collective bargaining agreements — what specific contract language means for your production
State-specific compliance determinations — whether your production meets the requirements of a particular state's labor laws
Whether a specific practice is legally permissible — for example, whether you can require crew to waive a meal break in a given jurisdiction
Wrapbook is a payroll platform, not a legal or compliance advisor. For these questions, please consult qualified legal counsel or your union representative.

Labor compliance FAQ
To help you understand how labor compliance works in Wrapbook, we’ve put together this list of frequently-asked questions.
Click the arrow next to a question to see the answer.
Is it legal to not give my crew a meal break?
This is a legal compliance question that depends on the jurisdiction and specific circumstances of your production. Wrapbook cannot provide legal advice on this. Please consult qualified legal counsel.
What does my union contract say about forced calls?
Union contract interpretation is outside Wrapbook's scope. Your Wrapbook paymaster can help with how union provisions are applied in the platform. For interpretation of specific union contract language, contact your union representative.
Can I use deductible meals in California?
Whether a specific meal break configuration is compliant with California law for your production is a legal question. Wrapbook can apply whichever meal break setting you configure; we cannot advise on whether that configuration meets California's legal requirements for your specific circumstances. Consult legal counsel before making this determination.
Am I compliant with state labor law?
Wrapbook configures calculations based on your project settings and applies the applicable overtime and meal rules automatically. Whether your overall production is in compliance with state labor law is a broader question that requires legal review. Wrapbook Support can help you verify that your project is set up per your expectations.
Who do I talk to if I have a labor compliance question?
See the table above. For platform setup questions, contact your Wrapbook Customer Success Manager or Wrapbook Support. For legal and compliance questions, please consult qualified legal counsel.
