Timecard day types & work zones

Overview

Day types and work zones appear on a worker's timecard to capture the nature of each work day and where it takes place. Together, they drive how wages, overtime, travel pay, zone premiums, and other pay calculations are applied.

Note: The day types and work zones visible on any individual timecard depend on the options supported by that worker's deal or rate. Not every option listed below appears for every worker or production type.

About day types

A day type identifies what kind of day a crew member worked — whether they were on set, traveling, on hold, in rehearsal, or away for personal reasons. The day type selected determines which pay rules and rates apply for that day under the worker's deal and union agreement.

Day types appear on the timecard when required by the worker's union agreement or deal terms. For non-union workers, the day type defaults to Worked and is not shown or editable on the timecard.

About work zones

A work zone identifies where the work takes place relative to the studio zone defined in the union agreement. The selected work zone determines travel pay eligibility, zone premiums, and related pay calculations.

Work zones appear on the timecard only when required by the worker's union agreement. For non-union workers, the work zone is not shown or editable on the timecard.

Work zones

Wrapbook supports nine work zone values. The options available on a given timecard vary by production type and union agreement — film and television productions use a seven-zone model, while commercial productions use a simplified three-zone set.

Work zone

What it means

Applies to

Studio

Work takes place on or within the physical studio lot property.

Film/TV

Studio Zone

Standard work within the studio zone as defined by the applicable union agreement.

Commercial

Studio - Report To

Workers report to a location within the studio zone; the work itself may take place elsewhere.

Film/TV

Studio - Bus To

Workers are transported by a production bus from the studio zone to the work location.

Film/TV

Secondary - Report To

Workers report to a designated secondary (non-studio) zone location.

Film/TV

Secondary - Bus To

Workers are bused from a secondary zone location to the work site.

Film/TV

Nearby

Workers travel to a location outside the studio zone, but close enough to commute home each day — no overnight accommodation required.

Film/TV / Commercial

Distant

Workers are at a location far enough from the studio zone that overnight accommodation is required.

Film/TV / Commercial

None

No work zone applies for this day. A user can select this to reset a previously chosen work zone. Used in specific agreement contexts.

Agreement-dependent

Commercial productions use only three work zones: Studio Zone, Nearby, and Distant.

Film/TV productions use: Studio, Studio - Report To, Studio - Bus To, Secondary - Report To, Secondary - Bus To, Nearby, and Distant.

Day types

Wrapbook supports a range of day type values. Availability varies by agreement, deal, and project configuration.

Deal-dependent

Travel and location day types

Travel-related day types — including Travel, Hold Day, Idle, Consecutive Pay, and HOA — only appear on a timecard when travel days are enabled on the project. This can be updated in the project's Default settings.

Travel time is recorded differently depending on whether the worker also performed production work that day and whether the worker's deal or union agreement supports travel details.

Day type

What it means

Availability

Travel

A day in which the worker travels to or from a shoot location but does not perform production work. Workers receive travel day compensation per their agreement.

Union (when travel days are enabled on the project)

Hold Day

A day the worker is asked to remain available but is not called in to work. Workers are typically owed a day's pay for hold days under their union agreement.

Union (agreement-dependent)

Idle

A non-working day at a distant location — for example, an off day during a distant shoot. May be paid or unpaid and may carry pension/health contributions depending on the agreement.

Union (when distant/travel days are enabled)

Consecutive Pay

A day that triggers consecutive-day pay — additional compensation when a worker works a set number of consecutive days without a break.

Union (agreement-dependent)

HOA (Home on Own Accord)

A day on which the worker voluntarily chooses to stay home rather than report to the distant location. Pay implications depend on the union agreement.

Travel-to-set time on a worked day

Use the timecard's travel fields when a worker travels to or from set and also works that day. The available fields depend on the worker's deal, work zone, and union agreement.

Nearby work zone

Use Nearby when the worker travels outside the studio zone but can return home the same day.

  1. Open the worker's timecard for the correct work week.

  2. Select Nearby as the work zone, if it is available for the worker's deal.

  3. Enter the total travel time for the day in the travel field.

    • Enter 1 for one hour.

    • Enter .5 for 30 minutes.

    • Enter .3 for 15 minutes. Union time is rounded to the nearest tenth of an hour.

  4. Save and recalculate the timecard.

Distant work zone

Use Distant when the worker is at a location that requires overnight accommodation.

  1. Open the worker's timecard for the correct work week.

  2. Select Distant as the work zone, if it is available for the worker's deal.

  3. Enter the travel-adjusted time before call and after wrap in the Set to hotel field.

    • For example, for a 9:00 a.m. call and a 30-minute drive from the hotel, enter 8.5 when the field uses decimal hours. This represents 8:30 a.m.

  4. Save and recalculate the timecard.

The timecard applies the travel compensation and limits configured for the worker's agreement. Do not add extra time to work around an agreement limit.

A dedicated Travel day

Use the Travel day type when the worker travels to or from a shoot location but does not perform production work that day. This option is generally available only for union workers and only when the worker's agreement and project support travel details.

Before selecting the Travel day type, confirm that travel days are enabled for the project worker:

  1. From the project’s People dashboard, open the project worker's profile

  2. Click to toggle on Enable Travel Days, if it is available

  3. Open the worker's timecard for the correct work week

  4. Select Travel as the day type, if it is available for the worker's agreement and project

  5. Select the applicable work zone when the timecard requires one

  6. Save and recalculate the timecard

Authorized production team members can enable or disable travel days for an individual project worker. The project-level Travel details setting in Project settings > Default settings controls the default for new project workers; the worker-level setting controls whether travel options appear on that worker's timecard.

If travel fields or day types are missing

The available travel fields and day types vary by worker type, production type, deal, rate, union agreement, work zone, and project configuration. If an expected option does not appear:

  1. Confirm that the correct project, worker, deal, rate, work week, and timecard are open

  2. Confirm whether the worker is union. Travel day options are not available for every worker or project.

  3. From the project’s People dashboard, open the project worker's profile and confirm that Enable Travel Days is toggled on

  4. Confirm that the selected work zone and day type support travel details under the worker's agreement

  5. If the option still does not appear, contact Wrapbook Support with the project worker and timecard links so the configuration can be reviewed

Non-union workers

Non-union workers do not use the union Travel day workflow. To compensate a non-union worker for travel time, include the travel time in the worker's regular work time according to the applicable arrangement.

Travel details and allowances

Travel time on a union worker's timecard should not be routed to a general Travel Allowance unless the payment is specifically an allowance configured for that project. For drive time, use the travel fields or the Travel day type described above. Travel compensation, caps, and related pay rules are calculated from the worker's agreement and timecard configuration.
