# How to complete your I-9 if you're a non-U.S. citizen or work visa holder

## Overview

If you're authorized to work in the United States on a work visa, such as an H-1B, O-1, TN, or STEM OPT, you can still complete your Form I-9 in Wrapbook. This article explains how to select the right document type for your immigration status and what to do if your document isn't available in the dropdown.

## What documents do non-citizen workers use for I-9?

Workers authorized to work in the U.S. on a nonimmigrant visa most commonly use a **List A document combination**, which establishes both identity and employment authorization:

### Foreign passport + Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record)

This is the most common combination for workers on nonimmigrant work visas (H-1B, O-1, TN, L-1, etc.). Your I-94 must show current, valid work authorization for your specific employer and visa category.

### Employment Authorization Document (EAD, Form I-766)

If you're on OPT (F-1 visa) or STEM OPT, your EAD card is a standalone List A document. You do not need to also provide your passport for I-9 purposes.

### Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551)

If you are a lawful permanent resident (green card holder), your green card is a standalone List A document.

**Important:** You may not use a foreign birth certificate as a List C document. Only U.S.-issued birth certificates qualify for List C.

**Important:** Birth certificates issued by a foreign country — including the United Kingdom, Canada, or any other non-U.S. jurisdiction — do **not** qualify as List C documents and cannot be accepted for I-9 purposes.

## How to upload your documents in Wrapbook

After completing Section 1 of your Form I-9, you'll be prompted to upload your supporting documents:

1. On the *Your I-9* page, under *Next steps*, click the **Name** dropdown
2. Select the document type that matches what you're uploading (see the table below)
3. Enter the required document details (document number, expiration date, issuing authority)
4. Click **Select a file** to upload a saved copy of the document
5. If your visa combination requires two documents (for example, a foreign passport and I-94), you'll be prompted to upload the second document after the first

## Document type selection guide

**Note:** Document type options in the Wrapbook dropdown may vary. If you do not see the correct document type listed, see the section below.

### What to do if your document type isn't in the dropdown

If you cannot find the correct document category for your visa type in the Wrapbook dropdown:

1. **Do not select an incorrect document type as a workaround** — this can create I-9 compliance issues
2. Contact your production company's administrator and ask them to reach out to [Wrapbook Support](/v1/docs/how-to-get-help-using-wrapbook) for manual assistance
3. Wrapbook Support can assist with manual I-9 document entry for visa types not currently supported in the dropdown

### STEM OPT workers: E-Verify requirement

If you are on STEM OPT (a 24-month extension of F-1 OPT), your employer **must be enrolled in and in good standing with E-Verify** in order to legally employ you. If your employer is not E-Verify enrolled, you cannot be employed on STEM OPT — contact your employer or HR team to confirm E-Verify enrollment status before completing your I-9.
